About Us

Center Head Start, under the administration of Saguache County Community Council, serves pre-school children in the community of Center Colorado. Center Head Start is funded to serve 92 children ages three to five. As a federally funded program, 90% of Head Start children enrolled in Head Start are required to be from families whose incomes are below the federal poverty guidelines.  If all eligible low income children from the area are being served, children from over income families may be considered for enrollment.

Center Head Start prepares children for Kindergarten by following the Creatve curriculum, and “Teaching Strategies GOLD,” which guides the teaching staff in providing a developmentally appropriate pre-K school readiness experience.  All children are assessed throughout the year for the attainment of skills in language, cognition, physical, and social development.  An individual development plan is crafted for each child with parent input to ensure that progress is made in achieving the goals of Kindergarten readiness.  Collaboration with the Board of Cooperative Services (BOCES) ensures that children with special needs are identified and served.

Parents have many opportunities to participate in the Head Start program.  They are encouraged to serve on the Policy Council or be involved with the Parent Committee to help plan events and activities, or volunteer in the classroom. but most important, to work with teachers in planning their child’s educational program.

Head Start is held accountable at the local, state, and federal level.  End of year reports are required and submitted to the National Head Start Office.  A financial audit is completed each year.  Regular tri-annual in-depth monitoring reviews to examine compliance with all federal requirements is done.  Food program reviews are done by the CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) at the state level as well.
